Free or low-cost pregnancy care. Income limit: Medicaid up to 146% FPL; prenatal coverage through the CHIP 'unborn child' (FCEP) option up to 317% FPL, regardless of immigration status.
Coverage continues for 12 months after birth. You may be able to get care right away while your application is processed (presumptive eligibility).
Must the father help pay for the pregnancy? Partly. When paternity is established, the court can order the father to pay the reasonable expenses of the mother's pregnancy and confinement (birth); child support itself starts at birth.
Ala. Code § 26-17-636(g)
Alabama Department of Human Resources, Child Support Enforcement Division: establish paternity and support
