For dads
A father's responsibility in California
Must the father help pay for the pregnancy? Partly. A parentage judgment can order the parent to pay the reasonable expenses of the mother's pregnancy and confinement (birth); a parentage case can even be filed and an order entered before birth, but enforcement waits until the baby is born.

Safe haven: no one gets hurt, no questions asked
In California a parent can safely hand over a newborn up to 72 hours old. Where: Hospital emergency rooms and other designated safe-surrender sites (often fire stations) marked with the statewide Safe Surrender sign.
