For dads
A father's responsibility in Iowa
Must the father help pay for the pregnancy? Partly. Iowa law says the father of a child born outside marriage is liable for the expense of the mother's pregnancy and confinement (birth); a paternity case can be filed during the pregnancy, but trial waits until after birth.

If you can't care for your baby
Safe haven: no one gets hurt, no questions asked
In Iowa a parent can safely hand over a newborn up to 90 days old. Where: Institutional health facilities (hospitals); a first responder after calling 911; newborn safety devices at hospitals, fire stations or EMS locations. You can stay anonymous. There are 2 Safe Haven Baby Boxes in the state.
